Spicy Tomato Soup

1 T oil
1 can chopped tomatoes
1/16 t ground cloves
1 t paprika
1 t basil
1 bay leaf
1/8 t pepper
1 medium onion chopped
2 C chicken stock
1 t sugar
1/8 t nutmeg

Heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until limp—about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes and their liquid, chicken stock, cloves, basil, paprika, sugar, nutmeg and bay leaf. Simmer covered for 30 minutes. Remove from heat, discard bay leaf and whirl in blender.

Just before serving you can add chopped parsley. Also nice is a drop of unsweetened whipped cream.
