Challah

Linda Elman

1 cup water
3 egg yolks
3 ½ Tbs oil
¼ cup sugar
2 Tbs sugar
¾ tsp salt
3 cups flour
2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast

Combine all ingredients and put them in the bread maker on the dough cycle.

Preheat oven to 350.

At the end of the dough cycle remove from the machine, and knead—adding more flour as necessary to achieve a smooth dough.
Divide dough into 3 sections, shape each into a rope and braid.
Place on a greased cookie sheet and cover. Let rise 30 minutes.
Beat one egg well.
Brush beaten egg over the exposed challah.
Bake for 30 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Let the loaf cool before slicing.
